You could just come for the Food.
Are we lucky with the food from this region! We actually straddle two areas: a seacoast rich with some of the most scrumptious fish in the Mediterranean, including the best prawns (shrimp) in Spain, and mountains with some of the most fabulous meats and fowl. All
enhanced by a variety of fruits, vegetables, and spices.
This is the home of artichokes and clementines, of almonds and
oranges, of saffron and pimento. Plus rice: one of a biker’s favorite
foods. A less starchy variety loaded with energy-giving minerals, grows in our region.
A bikers perfect meal. How did they know?
Hundreds of years ago, along the Orange Blossom Coast, the famous Spanish rice dish, Paella, was born. On its northern edge, the delta of the Ebro River fans out into perfect rice-growing country and the chief rice producer for Spain. The river is mineral rich and imparts these power sources into the rice.
Paella is a combination of rice with- you name it: protein foods like
chicken, all kinds of seafood, sausage, and meat, plus vegetables. You can have it straight or combined. It is beyond delicious. As bikers, we can appreciate this dish. It is the perfect meal for us.
So much food; so little time.
And there’s so much more. Simply cooked or grilled fish, duck, meats, a medley of Mediterranean diet vegetables including tomatoes, onions, eggplant, peppers, asparagus, peas, carrots, summer and winter squashes, and potatoes. Plenty of bread, cheese, and superior dried meats like ham, beef, and pork.
Up in the mountainous Maestrazgo, the focus of the food is more on meat. Savor grilled or stewed lamb, pork, beef, rabbit, chicken, and wild fowl, and that great staple, tortilla. Both areas offer a dazzling array of delicious desserts.
